Fishing for tuna can be a challenging, yet rewarding adventure. Tunas are very fast swimmers - some have been clocked moving as fast as 48 miles per hour. In addition, there are several species of tuna that are warm-blooded.

Unlike most fish species, which have white flesh, the flesh of the tuna is pink to dark red. This is because tuna muscle tissue contains greater quantities of myoglobin, an oxygen-binding molecule. Tuna has become a popular fish to eat, particularly in canned form. Most of the canned light tuna is skipjack tuna and is relatively inexpensive.

Fishing for tuna has long been a popular recreational activity. In the 1930s and the 1940s, bluefin tuna were abundant in the waters off the Florida coast and were sought by the likes of Ernest Hemingway. However, despite the popularity of the growing sport, the boats of that day were not properly equipped to fight the fish. In recent decades, the arrival of more custom built vessels has given new life to the sport of tuna fishing. Fishing for tuna largely depends on what specific type of tuna is being sought.

Albacore Tuna inhabit the western coast of the United States on a seasonal basis, specifically between the middle of June and the end of October. Their normal range typically spans from Baja, California all the way up to Oregon. Albacore have even been spotted as far north as the central Alaskan coast and as far south as tropical Mexico. During the rest of the year, they migrate to Japan and then return to California.

Albacore generally prefer deep waters and sea temperatures that are above 58 degrees Fahrenheit. As far as bait is concerned, Albacore typically feed mainly on small fish (such as anchovies and sardines). However, squid and small shrimp also make up important parts of their diet. Also, Albacore will often usually feed on what is available at the time.

During a good year, Albacore can be found within five to ten miles of the west coast - meaning that fishermen will not have far to go to have a shot at landing some of this type of tuna.

However, during off years, Albacore can be over 100 miles offshore. One way for fishermen to get an advantage on the Albacore is to study the sea surface temperature maps for warm/colder water gradients. This because Albacore follow the warm currents along the California coast.

Also, anglers should try to troll the warm side with feather jigs and plugs. When one of the trolling rigs gets hit, that is the time to circle around the school and cast live sardines or anchovies. Many times, chumming with live bait can entice the school of Albacore to the surface.

I’m a catfish lover by nature and here I’ll show you how to make catfish baits that will help you reel in the fattest of cats. I’m constantly at the lake with a lot of lines in the water at all times. Whether through the warm months of summer or into the depths of a frigid winter, I can show you how to reel in a cat no matter what the weather forecast with my time-tested homemade catfish baits.

Many new catfishermen think that you have to buy catfish bait from the local bait shop. Yet as time passes, you’ll come to realize that most guys lugging in the heavier cats are fishing with baits that they make at home. These homemade catfish bait recipes are what sets the men apart from the boys. Catfish seem to like a variety of different baits throughout the year. What may work one day in reeling in the fat cats may leave you coming home empty-handed the next. An important note is to keep track of local conditions. Introduce yourself to other local fisherman and find out what the catfish are biting on on a daily basis. I, along with many other cat lovers have always caught more catfish, more often than not, when chumming. Chumming is basically pre-baiting an area with small bits of the same type of bait you are fishing with for the day. If you’re fishing with tuna, then a tuna chum should be used to draw the catfish into the area of water you plan to fish. Now I know you’re ready to get your hands wet, so to speak, so on to the catfish bait recipes.

How To Make Catfish Bait - Homemade Recipes

The simplest of all cat fish bait recipes is the age-old hot dog. Simply cut up the hot dogs into one inch slices and push them up into a treble hook. Now you can stop there, but one of my favorite additions to the old hot dog catfish bait is to get a mason jar several days before going fishing and putting the cut up (one inch slices) hot dogs into the mason jar. Then thoroughly cover the hot dogs with garlic salt. Put on the lid, shake the jar ever so often and keep in the fridge until ready to go fishing. Cats love ‘em and I’m sure you will too.

Next on the list of catfish bait recipes is the grand-daddy of all catfish baits, and that is the time-tested chicken liver. People have been catching catfish on chicken livers since the beginning of time. The only problem with using them is that they are slimy and fall off the hook easily when casting out into the rivers and lakes. So here’s a simple 20th century fix that will keep those chicken livers on the hook. If you own a dehydrator, you just cut out some wax paper to fit your dehydrator trays and then lay out the chicken livers flat onto the wax paper on the trays. The chicken livers will take about three days total to dry out. You want them to dry to the consistency of beef jerky, pliable yet dried. For an added plus, sprinkle some garlic salt over the chicken livers as they are drying. Another great catfish bait recipe that will have you cleaning catfish for supper.

The last catfish bait recipe I’ll be offering here is for meat-eaters. Whenever your wife (or husband) is cooking any meat in the kitchen and there are trimmings to be taken from the meat, save those meat trimmings for catfish bait. I’ve even yanked in a few catfish in my days with just plain old chicken fat. I swear all catfish love garlic, so be sure to spread the garlic around whenever possible.

I hope these catfish bait recipes work as well for you as they have for me over the years. You’ll never know how to catch catfish with homemade baits until you try, so give it a whirl the next time you go catfishing and see how it turns out for you. You may just reel in a record!

Spring can be windy but when a calm day presents itself, anglers can catch tautog or sea bass over local shipwrecks and artificial reefs.

By June, bluefish arrive and are often present in large schools along the 20 fathom line. This fishing is 25-30 nautical miles from the inlet.

Sharking begins in June, with anglers fishing for several species of sharks, the most sought after being the mako. Sandbar, tiger, thresher, blue, blacktip, bull, hammerhead and other sharks also begin to appear about this time. Local anglers attract sharks by chumming with ground fish, then using wire leaders baited with whatever bait can be attained.

By early summer tuna usually arrive. Bluefin tuna prefer cooler water and usually move into the 20 fathom depths. In the early spart ofthe summer, bluefin are caught by trolling. By July, many anglers switch tactics and fish for tuna with cut butterfish. About the same time, yellowfin and dolphinfish begin to appear and many anglers troll for them from 20 fathoms out to Washington, Poorman’s and Norfolk Canyons. Some of these trips can exceed 70 nautical miles although good fishing is often just 25-30 nautical miles from home.

By late summer fishing heats up as tuna school up. Marlin, wahoo and Mahi Mahi are caught as well. Hurricane season has effects on fishing, sometimes keeping anglers from fishing, and other times bringing fish closer to the island resort. Patient anglers wait for a few nice days and enjoy good offshore fishing into the fall.

By October, most ocean fishermen fish for sea bass, flounder and tautog. As the waters cool further, red drum and striped bass or “rockfish” migrate down the coast. By this time offshore fishing has ended and most anglers either end fishing, begin hunting, or fish for striped bass which goes on throughout the winter months.

Surf Fishing One of the advantages of Chincoteague’s location is the easy access to surf fishing in nearby Assateague Island. Surf fishing is relatively inexpensive, peaceful, requires little in specialized tackle and no boat is needed. Anglers can reach the surf on foot from Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, or drive on designated areas with a 4 wheel drive vehicle. A permit is required for oversand vehicles.

Basic surf rods and spinning or bait casting reels are typical for surf fishing. Common setups use 17 – 20 lb test monofilament line.

Most anglers use just a few basic rigs for bait fishing. A hi-lo rig catches smaller fish, while the finder rig is used for larger catches. The hi-lo rig is a leader with a weight snap at the bottom and two dropper loops about 16″ apart. The fish finder consists of a 7/0 – 8/0 circle hook (or larger) tied to 20″-30″ of leader which in turn is tied to a 3-way swivel, which has a weight and the main line attached. A variation uses the same size hook tied to the end of a 12-20+” leader with a weight slide above the swivel end of the leader. The second fish finder rig casts farther and easier and the fish can pick up the bait and go further before noticing the weight. Using circle hooks help prevent deeply hooked fish and don’t require setting the hook.

Local tackle shops will have a variety of baits for surf fishing. General baits for a variety of fish will include squid, bloodworms and clams. Fresh or frozen bunker, cut into chunks and heads are a good bait of choice for drum, bluefish and striped bass.

Fishing begins in March but most anglers concentrate on fishing from Mid April-thru late fall. Species vary from week to week. Local fish may include red and black drum, flounder, striped bass, trout, croaker, spot, kingfish, bluefish, small sharks and others.

Flounder Fishing Chincoteague Island is well known for it’s flounder fishing opportunities. Many vacationers try their hand at the sport, and some anglers come to the island specifically to fish for these fish. Anglers may target flounder only at certain times. or choose to fish the entire season. Fishing varies with the weather, tides, time of year, location and water quality.

Flounder fishing is done by drifting the bays and creeks around Chincoteague and Assateague in search of a good days catch and an early season tan. The first flounder arrive in late March or April, with the main spring run usually coming from the end of April and into May. Mixed in with flounder are bluefish, gray trout, kingfish, rockfish, black drum and red drum.

By November, flounder fishing ends and outdoor enthusiasts can try striped bass fishing and waterfowl hunting!

Fishing in the deep sea is an amazing experience that once tried you will never forget. Here are some tips that will help you to enjoy your trip even more.

1. Watch what the sea and its wildlife are telling you

If you see birds, such as gulls, hovering over an area of water, pay attention. There is a strong likelihood that there are smaller fish that are used by fishermen for bait in the immediate area. This shows that there will be larger fish under the surface of the water. Driftwood is another sign of larger fish in the area. Follow these simple indications and you will be landing fish in no time.

2. Watch out for snooks hiding places

If you are on the lookout for snooks on your fishing trip, remember to look underneath ledges as they are a favorite hiding place for them. Snooks are very similar in their habits to bass.

3. Use crabs during a full moon

Crabs tend to shed their skins during the full moon. So when fishing during a full moon, try using soft crab imitations for your bait. This will entice stripers out of their hiding places to look for the crabs.

4. Find dolphins when fishing for tuna

If you are fishing for tuna, particularly yellowfin, the best way to spot them is to look for dolphins. Tuna school with them, so if you see dolphins you can bet that tuna won’t be far away. Just be sure to be careful that you don’t land a dolphin by accident since they are a protected species and must be treated with respect.

5. Burn, don’t cut

If you find that you can’t cut your line, try burning through it instead. You will find it is much easier to do and avoid being cut if your scissors slip.

6. Fish near a reef.

If you haven’t tried it before, fish near a reef. You will be surprised at the number of large fish that are feeding on smaller fish that live on a reef.

7. Raise your chances with a Circle Hook

If you would like to raise your hook up quota, opt for a circle hook. They will increase your catches due to their make up. And you will find removing the hook easier as it will not stick in the fish gut.

8. Find your sea legs

If you find that you are suffering from sea sickness try watching the horizon. It may sound silly but try to stay on deck if you can. Staying downwind of fumes is also advisable as they can make you feel worse.

9. Anchor trouble

If you discover that you cannot raise your anchor after dropping, use a float attached to it. By noting when the tide turns you should be able to free the anchor and set sail once again.

10. Find the fish in order to fish successfully

If you thought that you should be catching your live bait first and then moving away from the reef to catch more fish, think again. If you stay near the live bait, you increase your chances of catching the larger fish that are feeding on them.

If you are a fishing enthusiasts but have never experienced the thrill of big game fishing, then fishing for bluefin tuna should be your entree into this exciting sport. Bluefin tuna is a delicacy and highly prized by sushi connoisseurs and should be on the list of “must catch” for every big-game angler.

The bluefin is one of the swiftest and most elusive fish you’ll every attempt to catch. Their speed and size is what makes them popular among experienced anglers. Bluefin tuna weighing almost 1000 pounds have been caught in Ireland. Smaller size tuna are also commonly captured.

Hunting a bluefin tuna requires patience, careful planning and a little research. The Northeast coast of the United States and the Western coast of Ireland are two popular areas where bluefin tuna have been frequently captured. On the Northeast U.S. coast, June through November is the peak seasons for bluefin. On the Irish coast, August through November is the best time for bluefin tuna angling. Depending on your budget and travel preferences, either location is an excellent choice for capturing a trophy bluefin tuna.

Bluefin tuna can only be caught in the deep waters - they never approach shallow coastal shores. Their specific habitat has resulted in enterprising anglers to establish themselves as knowledgeable experts in locating and capturing bluefin tuna. Your best chance to catch one is to charter a private boat with a reputable skipper who uses well maintained equipment. The skippers should have a verifiable reputation for catching bluefin tuna or other big-game fish. You should avoid charters who claim they know where to find these sea giants but can’t document or prove their claim.

Scheduling a date and an experienced crew is not the only things you need to worry about. You should also use professional-grade equipment (rod, reel, etc) that is designed for big game angling. If you are an occasional big-fish angler, investing in this type of equipment might not be cost effective. That’s why the boat you choose to hire should provide all the necessary equipment you’ll need to catch a bluefin tuna. Most skippers include the rental of this equipment with the price of the charter. Other skippers will charge an extra nominal charge. Before finalizing your charter boat reservation, make sure what equipment is included so that you won’t incur any unexpected expenses. You should also be aware that you might also be responsible for equipment that is damaged or loss. Verify your reservations “terms and conditions” before confirming your charter.

Most boats come equipped with a “fighting chair”. This is a chair that is anchored to the boat’s deck from where you can easily “fight” the pull from a big-game fish. The chair is designed to anchor your fishing rod such that it makes it easier for you to reel in large powerful fish. Although this specialized equipment is not required, having a fighting chair makes reeling in your giant bluefin tuna a more memorable experience.

Conrad is an avid angler, has experienced big-game fishing all over the world and urges you to choose wisely before committing to hire a fishing charter. The last time he went bluefin tuna fishing was in Northwesten Ireland and he selected an experienced crew at Broadhaven Charters

Bluefin tuna are one of the greatest challenges to anglers off the coast of New England, and Massachusetts continues to be a center of activity for giant bluefin tuna. Most tuna are caught chunking or trolling. I will describe the techniques used by top crews to catch these giants.

Chunking for Bluefin involves archoring on a good fishing spot known to hold bluefin. Once anchored, top crews deploy chunks, stick baits and live baits suspended on ballons at different depths. Most captains have their crew position the baits where at the depth they mark tuna fish on their fish finder.

Many top captains use Gamahastu Live Bait hooks. In determining the hook size, it is important to match the hook to the size bait that you are using. You shouldn’t use a hook that is too large, because it will detract from the presentation of the bait.

All top crews use fluorocaron leader. Leader varies from 150-lb to 220lb, with many crews fishing light gear (150-180) to get bites when they are hard to come by. Most crews start off with a long leader (say 15 feet), so they can cut back and recimpt the hook on if their leader gets nicked up by dogfish or other pests.

Many crews using light fluorocarbon also use H crimps instead of G crimps for their 150 or 180 fluoro. The lower profile H crimp must be done carefullly, preferably using the Jinkai crimping tool listed on this page.

They also use these crimps to attach a small wind on swivel. This way, the leader can be wound all the way on the spool, protecting the flurocarbon during storage, ensuring clean decks, and allowing the angler to reel the fish as close as needed to harpoon it.

All crews attach the sinkers and ballons using rubber bands. Sinker weight is selcted based on the spped of the current and the desired depth that you are trying to fish.

Most crews that troll bluefin fish spreader bars from their outriggers at about 3-4 knots. Most crews fish three to four spreader bars, two from the outriggers and one or two flat lines. Outriggers are rigged with roller trollers so that the line can be reeled through the clip to tease the fish into striking again if he misses the first time. The clip is set tight so that the outrigger sets the hook on the fish.

Fisherman use different spreader bar sizes and colors in their trolling spread based on experience and conditions. Snap swivels are used so that rigs can be swapped out easily. Thimbles and heavy chafe gear protect the mono where it connects to the hook and swivel. Most crews use the Mustad or VMC southern tuna hook style on their trolling rigs.
